Prevention (professional hygiene)

The opportunity to acquire white smooth teeth in combination with the prevention of caries is an excellent incentive to make an appointment with a hygienist for professional cleaning of the oral cavity.

Many people wonder why we need a hygienist if we have a toothbrush and other hygiene products. Experts have proven that, despite the large number of oral hygiene products, it will still not be possible to clean teeth flawlessly from plaque with their help.

The fact is that there are hard–to-reach places on the surface of the teeth - interdental spaces and subgingival space, which it is almost impossible to process with a toothbrush. When cleaning at home, only 60% of plaque and food residues are removed. The remaining 40% is quite enough for the development of caries and gum inflammation. Moreover, the accumulated plaque mineralizes over time, turning into a brown tartar.

Considering all of the above, we can talk about at least three reasons why you should regularly consult a dentist for professional care.

Firstly, hygienic dental cleaning, the price of which is significantly lower than the cost of treating the same caries, will help prevent many diseases of the oral cavity and will save you from unnecessary trips to the dentist in the future.

Secondly, professional hygiene gives a visible aesthetic result, the dental surface becomes lighter, and the smile looks very well-groomed.

Any dentist necessarily advises his patients professional cleaning at least twice a year, and someone more often. Professional hygiene not only eliminates plaque and tartar, but is also an effective preventive procedure against many diseases of the oral cavity. Owners of implants, braces and various restorations, crowns and veneers cannot do without the help of a hygienist. Orthopedic structures and teeth with a bracket system require special care. Hygienic cleaning is also recommended for those who are planning teeth whitening or dental treatment. It will increase the effectiveness of procedures and enable the dentist to detect caries at the earliest stage.

Today, modern dentistry offers hardware methods of professional oral care, and the complex cleaning itself consists of four stages::

  1. Removal of tartar by ultrasound. The first thing a dental hygienist does is to remove tartar. To do this, he uses an ultrasonic skyler that acts on the deposits with micro-vibrations. The process is accompanied by a water pressure, which has a cooling effect, reduces discomfort and facilitates the removal of tartar. The procedure is almost painless, but with increased sensitivity of the teeth, unpleasant sensations may occur, in which case the doctor will offer you local anesthesia.
  2. Removal of plaque by air flow of small particles. After removing the stone, the hygienist proceeds to clean the dental surface from soft plaque with an Air-flow sandblaster. Under high pressure, an aerosol consisting of a fine suspension of water and soda particles is supplied from the tip of the device. With the help of this composition, there is an effective removal of plaque and surface pigmentation, as well as easy grinding of enamel along the entire perimeter of the dental surface. After the procedure, smoothness and natural color return, so the Air-flow method is often called bleaching. Note that sandblasting does not replace ultrasonic cleaning.
  3. Polishing the surface of teeth. After the hard deposits are removed and the plaque is removed, the surface of the teeth is polished using a special abrasive paste. Even if there are fillings, such treatment makes the surface of the tooth absolutely smooth, which prevents the accumulation of plaque, and hence caries.
  4. Fluorolac coating. At the end of the procedure, the teeth are covered with fluorolac to strengthen the enamel and prevent the occurrence of hypersensitivity. It, like a film, envelops the dental surface and remains on it from one day to a week.

Teeth are not only an indicator of human health, but also a piece of beauty. It's hard not to agree with this, because a beautiful smile with snow–white teeth is the key to success and admiring glances from others. Moreover, it is pleasant to have healthy and clean teeth to yourself. Improper care for them, non-compliance with hygiene standards, is fraught with the consequences of caries, the appearance of bad breath and a number of other diseases. Even the best toothpastes and brushes do not guarantee perfect hygiene and protection of tooth enamel. Therefore, the best solution is professional dental hygiene, which is carried out by a certified specialist, a dental hygienist.

Preventive hygiene – this is a whole range of hygienic and preventive measures aimed at preventing the occurrence of dental diseases.

Professional hygiene is a recommended measure before starting dental treatment or extraction, implantation, orthodontic treatment, prosthetics or bleaching. After the prof. Hygiene changes the microflora of the oral cavity, the number of pathogenic bacteria sharply decreases, immunity increases, which allows, first of all, to prevent the development of caries, prolong the service life of restorations, orthopedic and orthodontic structures, during dental treatment to more accurately select the color of the material for the filling, during surgical operations to minimize the occurrence of secondary infection.

It is advisable to carry out professional oral hygiene once every six months.

Of all dental services, Prof. hygiene is the most pleasant. Professional hygiene is, first of all, the removal of dental deposits (plaque, tartar), which are the main cause of the development of caries and gum disease. Removal of hard dental deposits is carried out with the help of an ultrasound device "Pieson Master" (manufactured in Switzerland). Then, with the help of special hygienic pastes and brushes, a thorough cleaning of each tooth, its grinding is carried out. With the help of the "Air Flow" system (manufactured in Switzerland), the smallest plaque is removed. Each tooth is additionally polished with ultrafine paste and polishing sponges. After all, plaque is not attached to smoothly polished teeth. Further, all teeth are covered with fluoride and calcium containing means to relieve sensitivity and prevent the development of the carious process.

Then the hygienist trains the patient in proper dental and oral care in general and selects the patient, depending on the diagnosis, individual hygiene products - toothpastes and brushes necessary for him.

Is it true that after hygienic cleaning there are gaps between the teeth?

That's not so. The feeling of space between the teeth after brushing is absolutely normal. And the cracks appear due to the presence of a dense stone that completely fills the interdental space. The presence of such a stone has a bad effect on the health of the gums and bone tissue. They are destroyed by microbial inflammation, forming bone pockets, and expose the roots of teeth.

Will it hurt?

Professional hygiene is perhaps the most pleasant procedure in dentistry. But if there are problems in the oral cavity such as gingivitis or periodontitis (inflammation of the gum / periodontal), you will most likely have to put anesthesia to avoid discomfort during the procedure. Anesthesia can also be given if you are concerned about the increased sensitivity of your teeth.

Is it true that a seal or a crown can fall out?

This is not quite true. A well-placed high-quality restoration (seal) or orthopedic construction (crown) using modern technologies simply cannot fall out of the usual preventive procedure, even if the doctor uses an ultrasound machine. However, there are risks when this can actually happen: for example, a decrease in the adhesive properties (adhesion to tooth tissues) of a seal or crown. If such a situation occurs during hygiene, it means that the seal or crown does not properly protect the tooth, bacterial plaque accumulates under the seal or crown and provokes the development of much bigger problems than the loss of the seal or crown.

How long will the procedure be enough for me?

Modern standards in dentistry recommend that Prof. hygiene for adults every six months. Children every 3-4 months, patients with braces also every 3-4 months. But here, too, a lot will depend on you, how exactly you follow all the recommendations.

Is this not the kind of cleaning after which you will need to do cleaning all the time?

Modern brushing of teeth is better and more correctly called "professional hygiene", as it comprehensively approaches the solution of the prevention of caries and gum disease. In the oral cavity of each person, a large number of bacteria are formed every minute, which are converted into plaque and tartar. In conditions of home hygiene, it is almost impossible to do this. The decision on how often to visit a hygienist will depend only on you, but we recommend doing a professional hygiene once every 6 months to avoid negative consequences.

What is the difference between hygienic cleaning and bleaching?

Hygiene is a therapeutic and preventive procedure that removes soft and pigmented plaque from the surface of the teeth, the whitening procedure acts inside the enamel and dentin itself, already affecting the pigment of the tooth, making it lighter by many tones.

Will my teeth become whiter after brushing?

If you brush your teeth well and do not use coloring drinks, the lightening effect may be almost imperceptible, in other cases, when there is a colored plaque on the teeth, the teeth become several shades lighter. In any case, after hygiene, the teeth become more shiny and beautiful. And the smile looks healthy and well-groomed.

Is it true that teeth get loose after hygienic cleaning?

Of course not. This happens only at the most advanced stages of periodontitis, when the microbial stone has displaced all the bone tissue that held the tooth. After removing dental deposits, the doctor will offer you options on how to fix the dentition, if it really became a problem. It is important to understand that if you delay treatment at this stage of the disease, you can lose your teeth altogether, not to mention that the presence of tartar affects the general condition of the body.

Is professional teeth cleaning harmful?

If the procedure is carried out correctly using all norms and recommendations, professional hygiene has only a positive effect. Our clinic employs only competent specialists who will help you to be satisfied with the procedure.

Are there any contraindications to hygienic cleaning?

As with any medical procedure, professional cleaning has some contraindications and features.

Absolute contraindications include:

  • the presence of a pacemaker (ultrasound is contraindicated);
  • immediately after surgical operations on the retina of the eye, with glaucoma;
  • bronchial asthma in the acute stage (the Air-flow sandblasting method is contraindicated).

The relative ones include:

  • pregnancy;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • impaired blood clotting;
  • early childhood.

Remember that completely exclude Prof. hygiene is not worth it. In any situation, a specialist will be able to choose alternative methods of carrying out the procedure, to which you will have no contraindications.

After cabinet cleaning, even more plaque is formed than before?

This is really the case if the specialist does not have enough time to carry out the procedure, and low-quality consumables are used. Many clinics allocate 20-30 minutes for hygiene! And they use the cheapest pastes and powder for Air-flow. As a result, an uncleaned plaque and poorly polished enamel give such a result. In our clinic, a special place is occupied by the quality of work, so the hygienist always has enough time to carry out all stages of cleaning, including for the correction of home brushing skills. And also the most modern and safe materials that meet modern requirements are used.

Does professional cleaning erase enamel?

Кof course it's not. Modern dentistry is characterized by a very gentle and individual approach. Enamel is the strongest structure in our body, and we need to try hard to damage it, even partially.

If fluoride is so harmful, why do they cover the enamel after cleaning?

We owe our negative attitude to fluoride to sodium fluoride. It is a product of aluminum processing. It all started in the USA, where they came up with the idea of disposing of this substance in drinking water and toothpastes.This happened in regions where the fluoride content in drinking water was already greatly exceeded. There are only a few regions in the Russian Federation where the fluoride content in drinking water is normal or slightly higher. In St. Petersburg, the fluoride content is 3 times lower than normal. But fluoride is found in many tissues of the human body, including enamel. Therefore, the local use of fluoride at a dental appointment is quite justified. When the enamel is saturated with fluoride minerals, it resists bacteria that cause caries 2 times more strongly. In addition, modern fluorinated products contain bioavailable fluorine compounds (aminofluorides), which are absolutely safe even if swallowed. Unfortunately, in budget toothpastes and hygiene products, you can still find sodium fluoride, which is not very effective. Therefore, you need to carefully study the composition of the product before buying.
